NerveSim is a simulated experiment for investigating the effects of drugs and the ionic composition (Na, K concentrations) of the bathing solution on the nerve action potential in the squid giant axon.
The intracellular membrane potential of the nerve is recorded from a 3M KCL filled glass micropipette electrode inserted into the axon and connected to an oscilloscope recording device via an amplifier. A second micropipette electrode connected to a stimulator allows stimulating current pulses to be applied to the nerve. Drugs (tetrodotoxin, lidocaine, 4AP) can be applied to the bath and the concentration of the Na and K ions can be changed.
